Description

Culvers Lookout was originally established in 1908 and the site was first known as Normanook Fire Tower. In 1918, a steel tower was constructed and was staffed by a state observer. The present Aermotor 47' tower, with a 7'x7' cab, was erected in 1933. The lookout is located in the Appalachian Trail corridor in Stokes State Forest.

Comments: I visit the tower site at least twice a year and NJ Forest Fire Service maintains site in very good condition. Present tower lookout is named NICK and is manned during high fire threat times.

Are electronic sites enroaching on tower? Yes
Comments: Some VHF Radio antennas on tower for NJ Forest Fire service radios plus at least one local FD.
Other enroachments? 600 feet away is 180 foot commercial tower with FM broadcast antennas( WNNJ, Newton, NJ 103.7FM) and at least 3 different cell phone providers have many cell phone antennas.
