When the original 121' wooden tower was built on Promontory on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in 1913 it was the highest in the U.S. Eleven years later (1924) the current 110' Aermotor with 7’x7' metal cab was erected. The original ladder was replaced with stairs in 1938. In active service, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
