California has the largest number of active lookouts remaining in the West, but even these are now being phased out in favor of other methods of fire detection. Keller Peak Lookout, on the San Bernardino National Forest, was the first lookout to be registered in the state.
The original structure was constructed in 1926, likely a Region 5 4AR cabin on a 20 foot, open steel tower. The original cab was replaced with the current Region 5 BC-301 in 1954.
Prior to its destruction in the Line Fire in September 2024, the lookout was staffed by the Southern California Mountains Foundation Fire Lookout Volunteers and open to the public during the fire season. Rebuilding discussions are underway.
