Built in 1946 for the Los Padres National Forest, La Cumbre Peak Lookout was an innovative experimental design with sloped glass and relatively high walls. Because of the relatively high cost at the time ($6,500), it was the only model constructed.
The new structure replaced a California Region 5 Plan 4AR cabin on a 10 foot open timber tower.
