Description

Fairwood Fire Tower was originally erected in 1952 as the Ila Tower in Madison County for the Georgia Forestry Commission. The 80’ Aermotor LS-40 steel tower with 7’ x 7’ metal cab was assembled by a crew of oil well derrick builders from Texas. In 1973 the tower was moved to Walton county and an exterior catwalk added. It is privately owned and located on the Fairwoods Stewardship and Educational Forest belonging to Don and Edith Shedd. It is the first fire tower in Georgia to be listed on the NHLR.
