The lookout on Arid Peak was placed within a roadless area overlooking the Milwaukee Road Railroad to provide early detection of train fires. The 20’ L-4 hip-roof cab with catwalk was built in 1931 and the tower legs replaced in 1969. Although this Idaho Panhandle National Forest lookout has not been staffed for 25 years, the structure is solid enough for restoration, which is slated to begin in 1996.
