Description

Elk Butte Lookout is one of two remaining active lookouts operated by the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association in North Idaho. It is one of two “lookout within a lookout” towers known in the U.S. Strangely, both are named for elk. (The other is Elk Neck in Maryland). The 80’ WWII surplus steel tower was erected in 1948 with a metal 7’x7’ cab. The wooden live-in cab from the earlier 1933 tower has been maintained at the 30’ level.
