At the northern section of the Mt. Tom State Reservation in Holyoke Massachusetts is Mt. Nonotuck (827'), a subsidiary peak. This area is known for the Eyrie House Ruins. The tower sits above the ruins at elevation 950' It is accessible by trail off Reservation Road. At the top are views of the Connecticut River Valley, including the Oxbow.
In 1861 the Eyrie House Hotel was built here as a vacation destination, a popular Summit House such as the one still standing across the Connecticut River on Skinner Mountain. Forty years later it burned down due to a fire started for horse cremation. There are stone ruins of the stable and hotel pavilion as well as other remnants of the buildings in the area surrounding the lookout tower. The tower was not part of the hotel.
The Tower itself is steel construction with red paint. It has a narrow base about 8' square. The stairs to the top are very steep - nearly a ladder. At the top is a wide platform that cantilevers off the frame. At the base of the tower is a small derelict shed. This tower is not as well maintained as its neighbors on Goat Peak and the Bray Tower both on the Mt. Tom Reservation, but its local history, incredible views, and steep ascent make it an exciting addition to a local Lookout Tower adventure.
