Description

Harris Mountain Lookout, a 50 wooden tower with 14 x 14 live-in cab and catwalk was the only tower of its type in the state of Maine. It was built by the U.S. Forest Service and originally stood on the Allegheny National Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania. In 1940 the tower was dismantled and purchased by the Maine Forest Service, which moved it to this location. The tower was removed in 2006.

Comments: On 8/19/06, I picked up the remains of the Harris Mountain Fire Lookout on my way to Deasey Mountain and some other area lookout sites. On Friday 10/27/06, Henry and I drove the remains 450 miles down to the Pennsylvania Forest Fire Museum and delivered them to Steve Cummings.

The following items were delivered:

o A 6 foot section of stairway (one-half of one full 12 foot section)
o One set of leg bolts and bushings
o One telephone line insulator
o Photos of the removal on 7/26/2006

This marks the final chapter for this old lookout.
