Mitten Mountain Lookout was built in the late 1940s from a kit that was delivered to the Columbia Falls train station and hauled to the site by truck. Forest warden David Grant worked with Hun Ashe and Arnold Davis to erect the lookout. Its first lookout was Harold Burgess and its second was Ray Pineo. Maine phased out the use of fire towers in the early 1970s.
