Description
Squaw Mountain is the first lookout in Maine and one of the oldest lookout sites in America. The first tower was built in 1905 by the M.G. Shaw Lumber Co. Other lookouts were constructed and in 1909 the state legislature merged all of them into the Maine Forestry District. The present steel tower with wooden cab was built in 1959. The land including Squaw Mountain was purchased by the Maine Dept. of Parks and Recreation in 1975.
