Description
The Aiton Heights fire tower has a colorful history. Originally erected by the MN Division of Forestry in the 1920s, it was moved to Itasca State Park in 1937 and assigned dual roles: visitor education and fire detection. The CCC ground house was occupied until 1957, and then later moved to serve a boat launching site. The 80’ Aermotor tower with 7’x7’ metal cab continues in service with David Quam (MN FFLA Director) as the park interpreter.
