On the Bienville National Forest eight fire towers were built from 1934 to 1940. Three towers were erected on the old Bienville Ranger District (Forkville, Shockaloo/Moore, and Sun Fire Towers) and five on the former Strong River Ranger District (Clear Springs, Heater, Polkville, Montrose, and Spinola Fire Towers). The Shockaloo Tower was dismantled in 1940 and rebuilt further south in Scott County and renamed as the Moore Fire Tower. This move helped to place it in a more central location to serve as the central dispatcher’s headquarters. The last of the fire towers to be erected was Clear Springs Tower sometime between 1937 and 1939. After World War II, the Heater Fire Tower was renamed the Coursey Fire Tower in honor of one its former lookouts who was killed during the war. Today only two towers remain standing: Moore and Clear Springs Fire Towers.
