In 1907 the first forest lookout on the old Cabinet National Forest (and the State of Montana) camped in a tent just below the summit of Star Peak (formerly Squaw Peak). Three years later in 1910, the stone cabin was built just below the summit and still stands. The present L-4 on a stone base was built in 1952 and remains the only active lookout on the Cabinet Ranger District.
