Description

As the artwork and photo attest, Stark Mountain Lookout on the Lolo National Forest is in the heart of Montana lightning country. That has not deterred Virginia Vincent who has staffed the lookout for 30 years. The multiple fires in the picture were taken August 4, 2000 by FFLA member Vincent who saw many of them burst out at the time of the strike in the middle of the night. In all there were 32 fires ignited on the Ninemile Ranger District that day. The first lookout at Stark was a L-4 on a 30' pole tower. It was replaced by the present R6 flattop on a 20' treated timber tower in 1964 and remains very active.
