Built in 1952, the 31’ metal tower with 14’x14’ wooded live-in cab with catwalk on Joanna Bald on the Nantahala National Forest was a replacement for a wooden lookout house with cupola built in the early 1930s. Staffed by the U.S. Forest Service, and then the N.C. Forest Service until 2002, it is now maintained for emergency use.
