Built in 1952, the 31’ metal tower with 14’x14’ wooded live-in cab with catwalk on Joanna Bald on the Nantahala National Forest was a replacement for a wooden lookout house with cupola built in the early 1930s. Staffed by the U.S. Forest Service, and then the N.C. Forest Service until 2002, it is now maintained for emergency use.

Comments: This beautiful tower is in good condition. I would love to see some volunteer opportunities here to clean up and repaint!

Comments: The tower is surrounded by outbuildings and communications towers. Various antennae are also attached to the tower itself.
