Description
January 31, 1937: "At the Garden county refuge, work was started by the WPA in 1936, and 25,208 'man hours' was devoted by relief laborers in improving it. They built a 100 foot steel lookout tower; service building and seed storage cellar." (Nebraska State Journal)
According to the USFWS website - The fire tower is one of two such structures built on the Refuge in the early 1940's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Although the towers are no longer used for fire observation, they are serving wildlife.
