Lookout Details
Description
The Lakehurst Forest Fire Observatory is certainly historic, but is not one the public is likely to visit because it is a military classified area. A memo dated May 31, 1922 refers to a contract to have a phone installed at the fire lookout station on the Aerodrome at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. The observer would have witnessed the explosion of the Zeppelin Von Hindenburg in 1937. The lookout operated until after World War II when military security restrictions led to construction of other lookouts in the region. The 7’x7’ standard metal cab on a 6’ tower atop the roof of the 95’ hangar remains in place.
