Bandelier Lookout was constructed in 1940-41 by the Civilian Conservation Corps for the National Park Service.
The structure is a NPS standardized fire lookout, drawing PG-3040, with a wood cab on a stone basement.
In 1943 the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) established Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) next to Bandelier, and in 1948 the Santa Fe National Forest, the AEC and Bandelier made a cooperative agreement for detection and suppression.
The lookout was actively used to at least 2016.
