Description

Berry Hill is the second fire tower in New York erected by the the Civilian Conservation Corps, and is owned by the NY Department of Environmental Conservation. The 59'3" International Derrick tower with 7’X7’ cab was built to overlook the thousands of acres of state reforestation lands planted in the ‘30s in the region just west of the Catskill Mountains.

Comments: On this date tower was not able to be climbed as we had no key to allow access. Thus unable to see condition of most of tower. Plans are in place to remove communications equipment and restore the fire tower to its historical appearance.

Active volunteers here maintain the property, mowing the lawn in summer and have already rehabilitated the Observers cabin. Plans are in place to remove communications equipment from tower, and with assistance of the volunteers, FFLA, and NYSDEC restore the tower to its historical appearance and allow visitors access.
