Description

The impressive 40’ stone lookout tower on Bear Mountain in the New York Highlands was constructed in 1931-34 and dedicated as the Perkins Memorial Tower to honor a Chairman of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission which owns the site and surrounding forest west of the Hudson River near West Point Military Academy. The 20’ x 20’ lookout cab is still used by the Park Commission during periods of high fire danger.

Bear Mountain State Park has numerous staff and some volunteer opportunities for staffing. The Maintenance is well done by park staff. Numerous historical displays are in place throughout the tower. There is one mention at the bottom of the tower on the first floor of the towers use as a fire tower.

Comments: The site is well maintained by Bear Mountain Park staff. The observation deck was open to the public. The footings from the former Bear Mountain Fire Lookout are just 500 feet away from the Memorial Lookout and easily accessible from a gravel road.
