Lookout Details
Description
Standing on a high promontory with a long ranging view south of Medford is Tallowbox Lookout. The Oregon Dept. of Forestry lookout was a tent camp in 1918. The first permanent building was a cupola lookout in 1923. During World War II the garage was converted into an Aircraft Warning Service winter residence and the site staffed year around. The current 14’x14’ ODF flattop with catwalk on a 10’ treated timber tower was constructed in 1963 and remains in active service.
