Located mid-way above the Mason-Dixon line, six miles north of Maryland, Snowy Mountain Lookout is in the Michaux State Forest not far from the historic Mont Alto Forest Ranger School. The 80' Aermotor tower with 7' x 7' metal cab was constructed in 1930 and made the news on October 29, 1973 when vandals felled the tower, cutting two of the four legs using only hacksaws. They were eventually caught and charged with replacing the tower in 1975 at a cost of $45,800. The new 80' Aermotor, with a catwalk on one side is located on the Appalachian Trail and is used during peak fire periods.
