Description

The first fire lookout atop Custer Peak on the Nemo Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest was built of wood in 1911. It had shutters but no glass, and it sat atop a platform without railings. By 1935 it had been replaced with a cupola building. The current structure is two stories high and was built of native stone in 1941. The cab is 14- by 14-ft. with a catwalk. The architect of the lookout was W. Ellis Groben who designed the building specifically to match its surroundings and environment.
