Description

Twice featured in National Geographic Magazine, Flattop Mountain Lookout in Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest has a stunning view of Mt. Adams. The two story ground house with 12' x 12' cab featuring slanted solid glass windows, was to have been a prototype replacement for the standard U.S. Forest Service lookout in the Pacific Northwest, but the relatively mundane R-6 flattop design won out. No longer in active use, and found recently to be located 40' across the boundary on state land, the lookout was almost removed to make way for a microwave tower. A fast-track restoration initiative is underway in an attempt to save the historic structure.
