Description

Located on Cranberry Ridge east of Cowen, Red Oak Knob Fire Tower overlooks the Williams River and Cranberry River watersheds in Monongahela National Forest. The 80-foot steel tower was erected in 1964 to replace an earlier 30-foot wooden tower built by the CCC in 1934. The present tower features a 14'x14' CL100-series all metal cab with wrap-around catwalk.

As of 2023, Monongahela National Forest has been working with AmeriCorps on restoring the tower to be reopened as an overnight rental. Roof, floor, and window repairs have been completed on the tower. A lightning protection system and lighting have been installed and modern pit toilets have been constructed on the site. A RV pad and hookup are planned to allow for a 2025 opening.
