Description

Constructed by the U.S. Forest Service in 1958, Black Mountain Lookout is a 13’x 13’ metal flatroof structure with catwalk located atop a rock knob and reached by a metal stairway through the giant boulders. Located on Wyoming state land within the Medicine Bow National Forest, the lookout is staffed through a joint agreement with the USFS, BLM, State Forestry, Platte-Albany and Converse Counties.

Good condition? Yes
Comments: I manned the lookout in 2017 and 2018. Painted all woodwork inside and out with two coats. Stairway in good condition. Roof not leaking. Only one pane of glass cracked slightly. Catwalk and railing good condition. Internet established now at Lookout. Outhouse blew off a few years ago and replaced at bottom with new pit toilet. Rug inside is old and needs replaced. All cabinets functional. Flagpole functional.

Are electronic sites enroaching on tower? Yes
Comments: New dishes added to railing for Internet access by local rancher. Mounting dishes to lookout was an exchange for Internet access to ranger station and lookout itself. A solar panel array was added to charge internet system and a bank of about 10 HD batteries.
