Description

Located above the Beartooth Scenic Highway on the Shoshone National Forest in the high peaks northeast of Yellowstone National Park, Clay Butte Lookout was first used as a fire detection point in the early 1900s. The flattop 14’ x 14’ cab with catwalk was completed by the CCC in 1942. The visitor center structure was added at the base in 1962. A popular attraction, the site has been staffed by volunteers since 1975.
