Heaven’s Gate Lookout was so named to counter the fact that it looks over the Seven Devils and the Hells Canyon area of the Nez Perce National Forest. The original 1924 log cabin with cupola was destroyed in a 1958 fire. Twenty years later this R-6 flattop with catwalk on a 10’ stone base was constructed. Heavens Gate was reportedly named in contrast to the nearby Seven Devils and Hells Canyon. Heavens Gate Lookout is currently administered by the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area and has been staffed in most recent years.
