Oregon Butte Lookout received its name because of the clear view of Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains from its summit. The first lookout was a tent camp in the 1920s, soon replaced by a log cupola cabin in 1929. The current R6 flattop in a 7 concrete base was constructed in 1963. Located in the Gospel Hump Wilderness in the Nez Perce National Forest and reached by a five-mile trail, it remains a primary lookout and is staffed every season.
