Description

One of the oldest lookouts still in full-time use within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the Payette National Forest in Idaho, it is also among the most remote. Sheepeater Lookout is named for a small tribe of Indians who earlier lived in the region. The current CL-100 14’x14' flat roof cab with catwalk on a 6' stone base and storage room was erected in 1976, replacing a L-4 ground house built in 1957 which itself replaced a log structure dating to the 1920s. In addition to fire detection, the lookout is an important recreation and communications contact point in the wilderness.
