Description

The first Slate Point Lookout was a 75’ pole tower with 7’x7’ cab and ground quarters built in 1931. The Nez Perce National Forest replaced it with an L-4 cab on a 41’ tower in 1948, which in turn was replaced by this R-6 flattop cab with catwalk on a 41’ timber tower in 1979. Nearby Slate Creek was named after early miners who found no placer gravel in the stream, only slate. Slate Point Lookout has been staffed in most recent years.
