Description

In 1922 the Bitterroot National Forest built the first Spot Mountain Lookout, a two story log cabin with windows on all sides. In 1934 it was replaced by an L-4 on a 10’ tower. The current R-6 flattop with catwalk on a 10’ concrete base was built in 1972. Spot Mountain Lookout sits in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area overlooking the Selway River. Located in the Idaho portion of the Bitterroot National Forest, management of the lookout has at times switched back and forth between the Bitterroot and Nez Perce forests, but Spot Mountain is currently managed by the Bitterroot and is staffed as funding allows.
