Likely constructed by the Bartlett CCC Camp 3752 in 1939. Associated structures were also built. Towerman residence and garage (standard plans) as well as an associated recreation site with pavilion as the tower site was located along the newly constructed US Hwy 60. Unsure of date of removal of residence and pavilion. Tower was staffed (intermittently) until 2019. The retirement of a longtime employee left lookout vacant. Lookout has been utilized for prescribed fire monitoring since 2016, has been outfitted by the Missouri Department of Conservation with antenna to track a recently reintroduced species of bird to the Pine savannah restoration area. Solar panels were added sometime after 2010 provide power to a wildfire monitoring system that was largely unsuccessful. Addition of these components provided an avenue for water to enter the structure causing water damage that will result in the replacement of some interior lower wall sections. Lookout is still functional with lookout stand and fire finder in place. Restoration activities are being planned pending approvals. Stairway landings will likely be replaced with metal grating during the 2027-28 fiscal years.
