Taum Sauk Lookout Tower was constructed by the Missouri Department of Conservation in 1949 and is the only tower in the state with a catwalk still in use. The 72’ steel tower with wooden cab--the first to be listed on the register in the state--is located on the highest point in the Missouri Ozarks (1,772’) within a state park. The name is derived from a Piankashaw Indian Chief: Sauk-ton-qua.
