Description

Atole Lookout was constructed by the U.S. Forest Service as Devil Mountain Lookout on the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado. Declared surplus, the Bureau of Indian Affairs claimed it and in 1996 a twin rotor Chinook helicopter from the Nevada Army National Guard moved the fire tower in three trips. A site on Tecolote Mesa was selected to provide detection on 131,000 acres of additional land purchased by the tribe. The 14' x 14' metal cab with corrugated flat metal roof and catwalk is of the Forest Service CL 100 series design and mounted on a 40' steel tower. This primary lookout is in active service by the BIA.
