Description

The last steel fire tower in the Bear Mountain-Harriman State Park, Jackie Jones Lookout was constructed in 1928 by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, who operated the facility until 1931. From that time the facility was operated by Forest Fire Control until it closed in the 1970s. The 60’ Aermotor LS-40 tower with 7’x7’ metal cab features windows of an unusual design.

Comments: The tower was in great shape when I visited. Not sure yet who did the work, but the tower was completely renovated. The metal was painted silver, new thicker wood was installed on the steps, walkways, and flooring for the lookout at the top. Amazing difference from the last time I was there in January 2018. There was even glass installed in the Top Lookout platform which is completely enclosed but accessible.

I would definitely recommend a visit for anyone loving this type of structure. Plus it a great hike to get to it.

Comments: This fire tower is in a poor state of repair. The cab floor and windows need to be replaced. All lumber on steps and landings need to be replaced. Roof needs repair. Tower needs to be painted. Due to the poor condition, the bottom set of stairs has been removed and the fire tower is closed. Beginning in the summer of 2016, discussions have been underway with Palisades Interstate Park Commission which governs Harriman State Park, the location of the Jackie Jones fire tower about repairs/restoration of same. Engineers, park staff, FFLA and volunteers have done site visits and plans have been developed for repairs. Work is expected to begin in April 2018.
