The Stissing Mountain Fire Tower is an International Derrick Model 1933. It stands 86 feet high as situated and is located n a section of Stissing Mountain in Pine Plains, NY. It opened in 1934 and was in service as a fire observation tower from March 1935 through April 1971. Eventually it became threatened with dismantling.
The Friends of Stissing Landmarks (FOSL) was incorporated in 1989 and sought transfer of ownership from New York State. This occurred in May 1989, with subsequent transfer of ownership of one acre beneath it from the Nature Conservancy to FOSL in May 1993. In the same year it was restored for the first time. Subsequent restoration began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2018. FOSL maintains the fire tower for public use year round free of charge.
