Description

The last active station overlooking the Willamette Valley, Green Peter Lookout first went into service as a cabin in 1916, which was soon replaced with a cupola lookout in 1920. In 1970 the Linn Forest Protection Ass’n. and the Oregon Dept. of Forestry moved the present L-4 live-in cab to the site from Jordan where it was originally constructed in 1949.

Additional information courtesy of Jim Basting: "In 2000 we had a new tin roof put on which changed the roof line. Also in 2004 the lookout was rebuilt. It was torn down to the stud walls and all dry rot was removed and replaced with new material. New windows, door, siding, shutters, trim, catwalk and guard rail were all replaced. It is holding up well and still looks brand new."; "With the advent of “smoke detection” cameras we no longer man Green Peter Lookout. There is a camera mounted on top of a 120 foot tall radio tower adjacent to GPLO which makes a 360 degree rotation every six minutes and can be controlled manually if a fire is spotted. It is very interesting technology and seems to work fairly well. We also have a “smoke detection” camera on Cougar Rock ( A USFS repeater site) about 13 miles to the East of Green Peter that covers the Cascade Mountain portion Sweet Home Unit of the South Cascade District. This camera covers a portion of what the USFS Iron Mountain Lookout used to see."

Comments: Greetings, my name is Jim Basting and I work for the South Cascade District (the old Linn District) of the Oregon Department of Forestry. I am in charge of Green Peter Lookout, it's maintenance and the hiring of the person who will man it. I thought I would send you some additional information. In 2001 we decided to start refurbishing the lookout, it had started to deteriorate after 34 years and with out some action it would be gone. With approval of the Linn Forest Protective Association we started with a new tin roof which changed the roofs shape but will last many years and require little maintenance. This past summer (2004) we hired a contractor and tore out all the dry rot and replaced pretty much everything from the floor up. All 2x4's that hold up the roof, all exterior siding, all the old windows, all the deck and guard rail were replaced. Cost for the refurbish in 2004 was $8125.00 and well worth the expense.
