Description

With this listing, Oregon becomes the first state to place 100 stations on the National Historic Lookout Register. The honor on Number 100 goes to Lava Butte Lookout on the Deschutes National Forest south of Bend, OR. One of the most visited lookouts in the U.S., the station is also a visitor center for the Lavalands National Monument. The current structure, the third on the site, was built in 1998 as a reproduction of a gable roof L-4 cab with catwalk. It replaced a unique slant window flattop cab with downstairs visitor center constructed in 1957. The original lookout was an L-4 groundhouse built in 1931.
