Five landing International Derrick and Equipment Company tower. Abandoned mid 1980s. Large star placed on tower in late 1990s by Rockwood Electric. Illuminated in November and December. Locals have named the tower Star.
The MT Roosevelt Scenic Overlook has thousands of visitors a year. Six states are visible from the cab of Star. Star has one of the most spectacular views in the East.
Star is structurally sound. The steps have rotted out. Numerous people dangerously climb the tower yearly. The Overlook is not maintained by the State and is basically an attractive nuisance. Rockwood is blamed for the litter and being unkempt. Rockwood arranges cleanup a couple times a year, even though it is not in the Rockwood.
A volunteer group in Rockwood has asked Tennessee for Star and has a plan to restore and allow visitors to safely climb. The rotten steps will be replaced with slip resistant galvanized steps and goat wire infill panes will be installed under the railings and around the landings. A series of cameras will be installed and remote-controlled gates will be installed. Ownership would be transferred to Rockwood.
The site originally had a Rangers house. Reconstructing the removed Ranger house has been discussed to use as a museum.

Located at the Mt Roosevelt Scenic Lookout - 1.4 miles on paved road off US 70 Rockwood Tennessee. MT Roosevelt is the highest point in Roane County. US 70 is being rebranded as the Walton Road Scenic Byway, and this will be a prominent stop.
