Description

The R-6 wooden flattop 15' x 15' cab on a 10' timber tower located on nearby Red Mountain in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is an example of the design that replaced the L-4 lookouts. Built in 1959, it is the fourth lookout on the site. During 1942-43 Red Mountain -- often subject to severe weather -- was staffed 24 hours a day as an Aircraft Warning Station before the days of radar. The CCC garage, which was renovated as a living quarters, is still there.
