Description

The first lookout on Timber Mountain in the ColviIle National Forest in northeastern Washington was a 50’ pole tower with a L-4 cab atop. The existing 41’ treated timber tower, featuring an R-6 flattop live-in cab and a catwalk was built in 1959 and staffed until 1981. The lookout fell into disrepair until the Pend Oreille Anthropological Society and the U.S. Forest Service began restoration in 1995 as a "Passport in Time” project.

Comments: Tower was in good condition, but found a large piece of metal on the ground that may be part of the roof hatch. Moved it next to the tower in between supports so it wouldn't blow away. no way to tell if hatch was open or not as shutters were very secure. building near tower has collapsed, outhouse still standing and in good condition.

Comments: I was the lookout on this tower the summer of 1966. The tower was then in great shape and also in 1979 when I last visited.
