First used as a lookout point in 1930, parts for the Wells Lookout were received in 1931 from International Derrick Co. In June 1932 the 60' steel tower with 7' x 7' cab was erected at a reported cost of $92(!) and put into service. The following year the site was staffed by a "lookout-fireman," meaning the towerman would take initial action on the smokes he reported if they were nearby.
