Description

The site of a lookout in the northern Adirondacks since 1909, the present Saint Regis Mountain Fire Tower was constructed in 1918 by the state of New York and staffed for 81 years before being closed at the end of the 1990 fire season. The 35’ Aermotor LS-40 tower with 7’x7’ metal cab is readily visible from the Forest Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths College and is a popular hiking destination.

Comments: Restoration by the Friends of St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower and NYSDEC was completed and the tower reopened on 9-1-2016. The tower is in excellent condition.

Comments? Trail and parking area are well signed. Parking lot had been plowed a few days previous to our visit.

Comments: While the 35' Aermotor LS40 steel tower and cab are in structurally sound condition the structure need considerable work to be safely accessed by the public. The structure is in need of painting and replacement of the north facing roof panel. Additionally, all of the wood including steps and cab floor need to replaced. The bottom set of stair risers have been removed from the structure and summit.
