Visit Reports

Condition

Needs paint? Yes
Shutters OK? No Response
Condition of wood OK? No Response
Stairs OK? No
Glass intact? No
Good condition? No
Comments: Looks doable for a complete restoration from our view from the ground as it is fenced in (understandably so as some of the wooden steps are falling apart). It would be a shame to let it go to waste. We understand $$$$ and manpower are involved to accomplish this. We (Andy Korkes and I, Jan Braidech are both members of FFLA and have visited a lot of fire towers) were astounded by the view from the scenic overlook and could even see one of our favorite fire towers, Big Pocono with our binoculars. It appears that the cabin may be missing some glass and like I mentioned, some of the wooden steps need to be replaced. I must say that this Dixon R. Miller Recreation Area is beautiful. We saw many different species of birds and butterflies in particular. Seeing one Scarlet Tanagers is a rare sighting for me being they are usually high up in the tree tops... We saw a Monarch butterfly as well as some type of black swallowtails of which there were many along your road up to the tower. If there ever is going to be a replacement of the stairs, etc., with some notice Andy and I could also lend helping hands...

Electronics and Enroachments

Are electronic sites enroaching on tower? No
Comments: I mean, you do have radio tower(s) and, I saw a Frontier communications truck while up there... The ranger's house(?) from the outside looked okay and there are other outbuildings within closed proximity to the fire tower.
